Privacy Policy

Effective date: August 25, 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how “Daily News: Highlight Bar” (the “App”) handles information when you use the App on macOS. The App is designed to work without an account and without collecting personal information.

1. What the App does NOT collect

  • No name, email address, or contact details are collected.
  • The App contains no advertising and no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
  • The App does not track you across other apps or websites.

2. Information processed

To deliver news and manage your subscription, the following technical data is processed:

  • Anonymous app identifier. On first launch the App creates a random, anonymous identifier (a Firebase Anonymous Authentication UID). It is not linked to your identity and contains no personal data.
  • Installation recovery identifier. The App creates a random installation secret and stores it in the macOS Keychain. It sends the secret to our backend over HTTPS only to recover an in-progress trial after a reinstall; the backend stores only a one-way HMAC digest, not the secret itself. This identifier is used for trial continuity and abuse prevention, not advertising or cross-app tracking.
  • Your preferences. The source languages, output language, and news categories you choose are stored on our server under your anonymous identifier so your feed and summaries follow you across reinstalls.
  • Saved articles. Articles you bookmark (headline and source link) are synchronized to our server under your anonymous identifier so your saved list is available across installs.
  • Purchase information. If you purchase a subscription, transaction data (product identifier, purchase date, expiration, and Apple receipt validation data) is processed to unlock premium features. Payments are processed entirely by Apple. We use RevenueCat to validate and synchronize subscription status.
  • Device integrity checks. The App uses Firebase App Check (backed by Apple DeviceCheck) and Apple DeviceCheck device bits to verify that requests come from a genuine app instance and to determine free-trial eligibility per device. This does not identify you personally.
  • News content. Article metadata (headlines, source names, links) is fetched from the GDELT Project and publisher sources. Links open in your default web browser; those sites have their own privacy policies.
  • Server logs. Our backend keeps technical logs (timestamps, request identifiers, error details) for security and reliability purposes. Logs are automatically deleted after at most 30 days.

3. How information is used

  • To deliver and update news content in the App, and to apply your language and category preferences.
  • To verify purchases and manage your subscription and trial entitlements.
  • To prevent abuse and ensure service integrity.

We do not sell or rent any information. We do not use this information for advertising or profiling.

4. Service providers

  • Apple Inc. — payment processing, receipts, and subscription management.
  • Google LLC (Firebase / Google Cloud) — hosting, anonymous authentication, and app integrity checks.
  • RevenueCat, Inc. — subscription validation and status synchronization.

Each provider processes data only as needed to deliver its service, under its own privacy policy.

5. Data retention and deletion

Preferences, saved articles, summary archives, and subscription records are retained while the service is in use. Technical logs are deleted automatically after at most 30 days.

In-app deletion. You can delete your server-side data at any time from the App: Settings → Privacy → “Delete account and all data”. This removes your profile, preferences, summary archive, saved articles, and the anonymous account itself. This cannot be undone. Billing audit records are pseudonymised rather than destroyed (all identifiers removed) so transaction integrity checks can still run. Alternatively, you may request deletion of server-side records tied to your anonymous identifier by emailing us (see Contact below) with a description of your purchase (such as an order number from your Apple receipt).

Free trial note. Deleting your account does not reset Apple’s DeviceCheck bits for your Mac. If you create a new anonymous account on the same Mac afterwards, the 14-day free trial is not granted again.

6. Your choices

  • Subscriptions can be managed or cancelled anytime in your App Store account settings.
  • “Restore Purchases” in the App re-syncs your subscription on a new device via Apple.
  • “Delete account and all data” in Settings removes your server-side records as described above.

7. Children

The App is a general-audience news tool and is not directed at children under 13. It collects no age information and creates no child profiles.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the effective date above.
